Winchester City Festival Choir
The WCFC is a choir of approximately 70 singers (Bass, Contralto, Tenor and Soprano voices) of all ages and musical interests. The musical director is Graham Kidd who encourages choir members to improve their singing techniques and extend their musical repertoire.
Our Main Concerts
In January of each year the choir presents a concert with professional soloists and musicians. The programme may consist of popular well known choral works as well as those performed less often. We also occasionally discover the delights of singing modern choral works, such as the Tsunami Requiem. (Look at the “past works” page.)
Each May, the WCFC joins with other Hampshire-based choirs in the Winchester & County Music Festival to perform major choral works at either Romsey Abbey or Winchester Cathedral. See concerts for details of future performances.
From September to May, we rehearse on Wednesday evenings, usually at Littleton Memorial Hall. After May we also have a short programme we call the “Summer Sing” when we learn shorter pieces, such as jazz, operatic and world music to perform at the AGM. Most recently we performed a jazz adaptation of some Shakespearean songs and sonnets (click on the music bar below to see how it sounded!)
In addition to the main concerts, WCFC performs at various local events each year as opportunities arise. We normally perform a Christmas Concert each year and sing Carols to support the community. The choir has also enjoyed trips to perform in Winchester’s twin cities of Laon, France, and Giessen, Germany. In 2013 most of the choir visited Cologne, Germany, to sing at a Christmas Market. Members of the choir also sing at weddings, small concerts and competitions. The WCFC normally uses the name ’Winchester Singers’ on these occasions. Occasionally we support other choirs with singers and we also support charitable events such as singing carols at the Winchester Christmas Market.
