Winchester City Festival Choir was founded in 1923 following concern that there was no choir to represent the city at the Winchester and County Music Festival (which was founded in 1921). Its inaugural concert took place on 13 February 1923 and was conducted by Mr H.W. Stubbington.
In 1940 the Choir performed in combination with East Hill Choir; the two choirs were formally amalgamated in 1942, using the name Winchester City and East Hill Festival Choir until 1948.
The choir performs an annual concert in the New Year with local professional and amateur musicians, and in May of each year we combine with six other local choirs to perform at the Hampshire Choral Festival (formerly known as the Winchester and County Music Festival).
The Winchester Singers, founded in 1923 was the touring concert group of the WCFC.
It undertook tours in France and Germany and took part in Music festivals in Germany, France, Southampton and Portsmouth. It was directed by Francis Wells and then his assistant Reg Fletcher. It was disbanded c. 2009.
From time to time singers from the Winchester City Festival Choir sing for weddings, other church services, and at charity events.
Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings, usually at Littleton Memorial Hall.
A 'Summer Sing', open to non-members, meets between May and July.
